Artificial Intelligence in the classroom
As a starting point, imagine Artificial Intelligence (AI) as your research assistant with a phenomenal capacity for language. Yet, it has virtually no capacity for emotions, human vulnerabilities, and experiential perspectives, which are the very things that allow us to connect with other humans. Through this lens, AI is not a system of replacement but, instead, a tool that amplifies our horizons when its information and our own research are shared with the human touch of emotions, personal experiences, storytelling, and vulnerabilities.
For this exercise, we will view research in three phases.
Phase 1: broad overview, Phase 2: Elaborating on central themes, and Phase 3: Adding details to central themes
Through this lens, AI is very helpful for creating broad overviews of topics in Phase 1, and it can be asked highly specific questions in Phase 3.
Nevertheless, our own research, perspectives, and personal experiences form the body of our understanding in phase 2.

Start by choosing an artificial intelligence model.
You will need to create an account, which is free.
PHASE 1
It can be helpful to start by asking broad questions that turn our knowledge gaps into empowerment.
i.e., What significant events influenced European art and society during the Renaissance?

PHASE 2
Ask AI to suggest a reading list that will allow you to dig deeper into central themes.
i.e., Can you create a list of peer-reviewed articles, books, and online resources focused on European art during the Renaissance?

PHASE 3
Step 1. Establish your protagonist(s). Beyond a person, this can be a place or a thing.
i.e., The artist Guercino or Italian Renaissance art

Step 2. Identify objective external influences.
i.e., economics, religion, politics, etc.
- or -
overlay another subject
i.e., science, math, ethnic studies, etc.

Step 3. Ask questions that bring together the protagonist(s) from step one with the external influence from step two.
i.e., In what ways did 17th-century politics and economics affect Guercino as an artist?
OR...
combine the protagonist from step one with another subject.
i.e., In what ways can we find science influencing Italian Renaissance artists?

Now, at the end of your research with AI, you can ask it to create a lesson plan based on everything you have just researched with it. Importantly, you can ask it to make the lesson plan specific to your classroom.
i.e., 10th graders learning about personal resilience and politics.
HELPFUL TIPS
After you start getting answers to questions, ask follow-up questions.
i.e., Suppose in an answer to one of our previous questions on mathematics and Italian Renaissance art; AI helps us to discover that "Linear Depth Perspective majorly influenced Renaissance painting."
Now, you can take proper nouns or new concepts from previous answers and ask follow-up questions
i.e., What exactly is Linear Depth Perspective, and which artists of the Renaissance show great examples of Linear Depth Perspective in their paintings?
To get the most out of AI, you need to pay for a subscription; this is to say the information in the paid version is more advanced than the free version.
On you.com, you can receive a discount to a subscription if you are an educator.
Ultimately, artificial intelligence allows us to instantly access diverse data points to discover if they intersect and, if so, to what extent.
